Federal Government Support Procurement Reform to Stop Waste and Fake Drugs for Health Sector

Federal Government don take new step to strengthen how dem dey buy health supplies by certifying new set of procurement officers under di CIPS–HPA Nigeria programme. Officials talk say dis reform go help reduce wastage, boost transparency, and make sure Nigerians fit get safe and affordable medicine. Dem make di announcement during graduation ceremony for Abuja, wey Director-General of Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, CIPS Country Director, Chukwudi Uche, and CIPS Country Manager, Pharm. Omokhapue Joseph, address di graduates. Dr. Adedokun talk say di certification show say di officers don get correct professional skill and follow better procurement ethics. “Di success wey una get mean say woman wey need small health care and pikin wey need common drug go fit get better treatment and correct prescription when dem waka go any hospital,” he tell di graduates. He also add say di move go help stop malpractice and corruption for health procurement. “Dis certificate mean say we now get people wey go say no to fake drugs, say no to inflated contracts, and say no to wrong prescriptions,” he add. Di BPP DG still talk say government don adjust procurement threshold to match economic problem, and dem don introduce standard documents plus better sourcing strategies for health-related procurement.

Dr. Adedokun warn all procurement officers make dem register for National Procurement Officers Management System. “If your name no dey there, you no be procurement officer, you be quack,” he talk. Chukwudi Uche, CIPS Country Director, talk say di programme don already help some states save money. “With our support, some states don save up to 40–50% on health products. Wetin dat mean be say more Nigerians fit now get better drugs wey no go cost dem too much,” Uche explain. He add say better procurement dey help local manufacturers plan well and invest more to make di supply chain stronger. Pharm. Omokhapue Joseph talk say di officers wey dem train come from federal and state agencies like Federal Ministry of Health, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, and BPP. He describe dem as “change agents” wey go help regulators build better policies to clean up di health sector. He still add say di programme, wey Gates Foundation support, na to tackle di long-time problem wey dey health procurement by building skill and accountability. All di officials agree say dis reform go bring better coordination, stop double work, and improve efficiency for health procurement across Nigeria
