Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) don carry Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) go Federal High Court for Abuja because of the commission plan to increase salaries of political and public office holders, including President, Vice President, Governors, their deputies, and National Assembly members. Last month, RMAFC Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, reveal say the commission wan increase the salaries as the current ones dey “paltry.” Shehu talk say President Bola Tinubu dey earn N1.5 million per month, wey he describe as laughable for a country with over 200 million people, and say the salary never change since 2008.
But SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, talk on Sunday say the group don file case number FHC/ABJ/CS/1834/2025 for court last week, even though hearing date never show. For the case, SERAP dey ask the court to rule whether the plan to increase salary for top government officials no dey illegal, unconstitutional and against the rule of law. Dem want court to declare say the proposed salary increment no follow the 1999 Nigerian Constitution and the RMAFC Act. Oluwadare talk say SERAP dey seek court order to stop RMAFC and their agents from increasing salaries, and instead order make dem reduce the money to reflect the economic wahala wey Nigerians dey face. He say reducing the salaries go better align with the Constitution, international human rights agreements, and the current economic situation for the country. SERAP argue say if dem no stop RMAFC from raising salary anyhow, e go affect the interest of the public wey dey suffer already.
