Starting from November 1, 2025, Nigerians wey dey use ChatGPT go begin pay more as OpenAI don introduce 7.5% VAT on all di paid services wey dem dey offer, to follow Nigerian tax law. OpenAI talk this one for email wey dem send to dia users on Tuesday, say di new VAT go affect all dem billable plans, including ChatGPT Plus. Di monthly subscription go waka from N31,500 ($20) to about N33,862.50 ($22.43). Dem say this step dey in line with Section 10 of di VAT Act, Laws of di Federation of Nigeria 2004 (as amended), and di Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Circular 2021/19.

OpenAI still advise make users put dia Tax Identification Number (TIN) for payment settings to arrange better tax documentation. This move follow wetin big tech companies like Google, Netflix, Amazon and Meta don already dey do, as all of dem don dey charge VAT for Nigerians wey dey use digital services. Di VAT collections from these foreign companies don help Nigeria make billions. Last December, NITDA report say foreign digital giants like Google, Microsoft, and TikTok pay total of N2.55 trillion in tax for first half of 2024. Now, OpenAI don join dem for Nigeria digital tax gang.
