Di Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) don hail di new 15% import tax wey federal government slam on petrol and diesel, say e make economic sense well-well. But dem still advise government make e focus on boosting local refinery capacity before di new tax go fully bite. Di Chamber talk say di policy fit help Nigeria stop to depend on foreign fuel and boost local refinery work, but warn say if dem rush am without enough local production, e fit cause fuel scarcity, high pump price and even worsen inflation wahala.
Di LCCI Director-General, Dr. Chinyere Almona, yarn say e important make government empower both public and private refineries, including modular ones, and use naira instead of foreign exchange for crude oil supply to help cut cost and stabilize production. She beg government make dem reason with labour unions and keep everything transparent so confidence go dey for private sector. Almona still talk say di 15% tax good on paper, but e go only work if government implement am well and reduce di burden on ordinary Nigerians. She add say once local refining strong, Nigeria go fit save forex, create jobs, strengthen di naira, and make more money for di country.
