Di 5th edition of AmuwoGames don show say grassroots sports dey very important for discovering and training young talent for Lagos communities. Seun Ayeni, di founder and chief convener of AmuwoGames, talk say na grassroots engagement go help find hidden sporting stars. Ayeni yan for Iman College wey be venue of di event say, “If we no go deep to di grassroots, if we no touch di grassroots, we no go discover dem.” He still encourage other communities make dem copy wetin dem dey do for Amuwo Odofin, saying na efforts of people and youths for di community dey bring results. Lagos State Sports Commission don give organisers free pass to scout and bring talented athletes for trials, wey Ayeni describe as big opportunity for young participants. He also inspire di athletes say, “You no dey win if you quit, just continue. Some people dey here two years ago, dem no get medal, but today dem dey waka home with medal. Na di spirit of champion be dat.”
Di festival gather over 50,000 participants across 16 sports, including football, cycling, chess, and ayo, with about 600 athletes competing for medals and 198 medalists emerging. Di inclusive format allow people beyond football to participate, even 70-year-old man play ayo. Festac Bulls become overall champions with four gold, three silver, and one bronze, GRA Rhinos come second with three gold, three silver, and three bronze, while Mile 2 Hawks take third with three gold, two silver, and five bronze. Football tournament get big cash prizes: N500,000, N300,000, and N200,000 for di top three teams by sponsor Espoca. Closing ceremony gather dignitaries like Hon. Stella Osafile of Lagos State House of Assembly, Oluwaseyi Adegoke-Adeyemo of Inside Watch Africa, festival sponsors, and Miss Chinyere of Lagos State Sports Commission. Organisers thank community, sponsors, and Lagos State Sports Commission, and dem yan say AmuwoGames go continue to promote grassroots talent, discipline, and unity, while reinforcing dis year theme: “Cancel Scam Culture,” with Ayeni yan, “Beauty dey for legitimacy. Make we celebrate no scam, cancel scam culture.”
