The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) don suspend their strike after dem reach agreement with Dangote Refinery management say workers get right to join union. Dem settle the matter for one closed-door meeting wey Department of State Services (DSS) arrange, and wey Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, plus reps of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) attend. Acting NLC General Secretary, Benson Upah, confirm how the meeting take end, and Ministry of Labour talk say dem go drop official statement soon. The resolution come after Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment call conciliation meeting on Monday, September 8, 2025, when NUPENG threaten to go on strike as Dangote refuse to gree make workers unionise. NUPENG national executives, and officials of NLC and TUC all show face for the meeting.
Inside the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) wey dem sign, both parties agree say unionisation na correct right under labour law, and Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals workers wey wan join union go dey free to do so. Dem agree say unionisation go start immediately and complete within two weeks. The MOU talk say management no go create another union, and nobody go face punishment because of the strike matter. Based on the agreement, NUPENG suspend their strike immediately, and all parties go report back to Minister of Labour one week after dem finish the unionisation process. The MOU get signatures from Sayyu Dantata for Dangote Group, O.K. Ukoha for NMDPRA, Ojimba Jibrin for Dangote Group, and union reps Benson Upah for NLC, N.A. Toro for TUC, Akporeha Williams and Afolabi Olawale for NUPENG. Ministry of Labour sign through Amos Falonipe. The strike begin Monday as NUPENG accuse Dangote of hiring drivers wey dem warn not to join union. Dangote management deny the claim say na cheap blackmail. The refinery, wey start operation last year with 650,000 barrels per day capacity, na Africa’s biggest and e dey reduce fuel import wahala. But monopoly fear don rise as Dangote dey dominate the market. Dangote wan deploy plenty gas-powered trucks go distribute fuel, but that plan never click, and e don cause kasala with diesel tanker drivers. During the strike, Dangote spokesman Anthony Chiejina talk say fuel dey and everything still dey go normal. NUPENG strike get local and international support, including from NLC, IndustriALL (Switzerland), and ILAW (Washington).
