Police Trace Death Threat to Prison Inmate

Police investigation reveal say death threat message wey Benin City resident, Odion Akagbosu, receive recently come from one inmate inside Oko Correctional Centre instead of kidnappers outside prison, exposing alleged criminal activities from inside correctional facilities.

Investigators say inmates for correctional centres like Kirikiri in Lagos, Kuje in Abuja and Warri in Delta allegedly dey coordinate internet fraud, extortion, fake bank alerts, robbery and kidnapping while still in custody.

Federal Government on May 4, 2026, sanction 147 Nigerian Correctional Service officers over contraband offences and order destruction of 1,167 mobile phones recovered from prisons nationwide to curb di illegal operations.

Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, admit say contraband items like phones, SIM cards and chargers don become major tools wey criminals dey use to run organised crimes from inside correctional centres.
