Strike Dey Loom: ASUU, VCs Vex say Professors Dey Collect Only ₦525,000 Every Month

ASUU don finish dia nationwide protest wey happen on Tuesday, and dem members dey prepare now to hold congress for inside campuses to decide wetin dem go do next. Dis na as Federal Government dey hold meeting today to try solve di long wahala wey dey ground since about di 2009 agreement between dem and ASUU wey dem don renegotiate but never implement. Earlier dis year, Tinubu government bin release ₦50 billion to pay academic allowances wey dem owe lecturers and staff, but ASUU still dey complain say dat one no reach. Dem dey ask for better salary, better work condition, better money to fund universities, autonomy for schools, and make dem review di laws wey guide NUC and JAMB. Di meeting today go involve Minister of Education, Labour Minister and National Salaries Commission, and dem go try settle how dem go take sign and implement di new agreement. But ASUU president, Prof. Piwuna, talk say dem no invite dem come di meeting and dem go wait make dem consult dia members before dem talk wetin go happen next.

ASUU still dey para say lecturers dey suffer  professors dey collect about ₦500k per month, and after dem remove tax and other deductions, money fit reduce to about ₦300k. Some lecturers dey sleep for office or dey struggle enter student bus. Even senior people like Prof. Ogundipe and Prof. Adeoye don shout say lecturers moral don die, and many dey ready to japa. Dem compare Nigeria with countries like Kenya and Zimbabwe wey dey pay lecturers better. ASUU reject government loan-style support, say dem want correct entitlement. Dem warn say if government no act fast, strike fit start again. Prof. Haruna wey don teach for 10 universities for Europe talk say di problem no be just salary, but say Nigeria no dey value academics at all. He say professors fit work anywhere in di world but Nigeria dey pay dem like dem no matter. Di whole matter don reach level where lecturers no fit buy drug or pay house rent again. ASUU say dem don try, now na government turn to show commitment.
