INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, don warn say free, fair and credible 2027 elections fit dey difficult unless di electoral body get full financial autonomy, as e tok during one book launch for Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, say, “If we are serious about strengthening our institutions and conducting free, fair and credible elections, then financial autonomy is essential.”
Amupitan explain say although di Constitution place INEC funding under di Consolidated Revenue Fund, di commission still dey pass through normal budget approval process, wey according to am, dey weaken di commission operational independence.
Di INEC chairman also tok say credible elections no be only INEC responsibility, adding say political parties, security agencies, di media, civil society groups and Nigerians must all play dia part to make elections succeed.
E urge government and relevant stakeholders make dem grant INEC full financial independence, insisting say na one major way to strengthen public confidence and protect di credibility of di 2027 general elections.
