Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), don advise residents and community leaders make dem support good hygiene, dey alert, and report bad sanitation to stop cholera from spreading for Lagos. Ajayi talk this one during one seminar for informal food and water sellers and waste workers wey dey flood-affected areas, organised by LASEPA and UNIDO with money from Japanese government. He talk say after heavy rain and flood for June 2024, cholera cases sharply rise because some places no get proper waste management, drainage, clean water, and good food hygiene. “If drainage block, water dirty, or food sellers no handle food well, cholera risk go high. Waste workers and vendors dey very important but many no get correct training and tools. This project go teach dem how to keep environment and food clean,” Ajayi talk.
The project go train these people how cholera take spread, proper food and water handling, hygiene, and waste disposal. E go also run awareness campaign for flood areas. Ajayi add say if the project succeed, Lagos go get less cholera cases, fewer deaths, and better economy as people no go spend much on treatment. Charles Uzoma from UNIDO talk say cholera for Lagos na mainly because flood water wey contaminate water, poor hygiene, and weak law enforcement. Adefemi Afolabi from Lagos Wastewater Management Agency warn say cholera don dey happen plenty times and everybody suppose join hand stop am.
