For statement on Tuesday, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, order di closure on Monday during her unscheduled inspection visit, where she go with di Director of Occupational Safety and Health, Mrs Florence Owie and officials from di OSH departments for Lagos and Ogun states. Onyejeocha talk say President Bola Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda no go allow employers wey dey endanger Nigerian workers under disguise of providing jobs. For True Metals Nigeria Limited, a battery recycling plant, di minister vex as she see hazardous and dehumanising working conditions workers dey exposed to unprotected lead emissions, no access to proper sanitation, and dem dey operate without mandatory automation equipment despite previous warnings. She talk say giving Nigerians jobs no mean say dem fit put their lives at risk. She order di factory make dem seal am immediately until full compliance with OSH regulations.
For Phoenix Steel Mills Limited, Onyejeocha no even fit enter di factory floor because di internal roads no safe and no passable. She observe stagnant water and no drainage, wey she say violate di Factory Act and show total disregard for workers’ safety. Di facility come dey sealed pending remediation and new compliance checks. After di exercise, she tell journalists say di ministry go increase enforcement against mistreatment and dehumanisation of workers, say many factories dey treat Nigerians like dem no be human beings paying dem N3,000 or N4,000 per day and still exposing dem to danger. She warn say dat era don finish as government go continue inspections and seal any factory wey no comply. Onyejeocha remind employers say safety regulations no be optional and economy hardship no be excuse to endanger lives. She emphasise say all categories of workers—skilled, unskilled, men, women—deserve dignity, fair wages and humane treatment. She conclude say under di Renewed Hope Agenda, “every worker matter” and Nigeria no go create jobs wey dey kill people.
