Lagos State, in partnership with di International Society of Media in Public Health (ISMPH) and Engender Health, don renew dia call for more access to family planning services and better awareness on reproductive health rights as dem mark 2025 World Contraception Day. Di event wey carry di theme: “Empowering Choices, Your Future, Your Control” bring government people, health experts and development partners together to talk how people fit make informed reproductive health decisions without force or discrimination. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, wey be Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu, talk say Lagos still dey committed to give residents safe, affordable and effective contraceptives. She talk say even though Lagos get 37% modern contraceptive use (one of di best for Nigeria), people wey dey migrate from other states and countries dey increase demand. She say reducing Lagos fertility rate (2.3%) go help cut maternal death, support economic growth, and improve quality of life.
She still mention say family planning fit reduce maternal deaths by 34%, help pikin survival, protect women rights, and support dem career and life goals. Lagos don partner with civil society groups, private clinics, and international bodies like UNFPA, Engender Health, and Gates Foundation to boost access—like through self-inject contraceptives for women, postpartum family planning, and training for over 350 clinics. On him side, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, di Permanent Secretary for Health, assure say all family planning options for state clinics safe and reversible, and encourage people to use di free service. Mr. Sanl Ochepo from Society for Family Health (SFH) talk say dem dey work with private and community clinics to reach more people, especially for grassroots. Speakers talk say make families, schools and workplaces dey discuss reproductive health openly to fight myth and remove barriers. Dem end di event with call for better investment, awareness and support to stop unwanted belle and protect Lagos people future.
