Ohanaeze Ndigbo Eti-Osa Celebrate New Yam Festival

Ohanaeze Ndigbo for Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State don celebrate dis year New Yam Festival (Iriji) on September 6, 2025. Di event happen for Homes Thomas Estate, Ajah, Lagos. Di festival no just be ordinary celebration dem use am empower poor people, widows, youths and elderly wey dey struggle financially, and also to showcase di rich culture and tradition of di Igbo people.

For di event, Eze Gerald Onuchukwu Gerico, wey be Eze-Ohazurunye, Eze Udo/Onyendu Ndigbo of Eti-Osa, talk say yam na di most important crop for Igbo land and di festival dey used to thank God for better harvest and to pray for peace and protection for di community. He say di 2025 New Yam Carnival also serve as chance to help people wey no get, by giving dem tools and support to reduce di economic wahala wey dem dey face. Eze Gerico also explain say di festival dey used honour people wey don serve di community well with chieftaincy titles and awards, and na also opportunity to promote Igbo culture, especially among di younger generation. He beg Igbo parents make dem teach their children Igbo language and traditions so say culture no go die.

Chief Onyeka Onachuachu, wey be Ezewanta 1 and Palace Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Eti-Osa LGA, talk say for Igbo culture, yam no be ordinary food e be sacred crop wey hold special place among Igbo people everywhere. He explain say before any man chop new yam, e must first gather him family, friends, and people for community make dem celebrate and share di yam together before e go chop am. He say na part of Igbo tradition and lifestyle, and efforts dey ground to preserve di culture for future generations. For di event, Professor Jude Iheanacho collect chieftaincy title of “Ome Ogo of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Eti-Osa”, while Chief Augustine Ikwuezunma become “Obátáifê adi Ozubulu, Obátáifê adi of Eti-Osa.” Di Planning Committee for di New Yam Festival/Cultural Carnival include Mrs. Helen Kalu (Eti-Osa LGA Woman Leader), Chief Onyeka Onachuachu (Ezewanta 1, Palace Secretary), Friday Abah (Chairman, Eti-Osa LGA), H.H Prince Ubochi C. Ubochi (Traditional Prime Minister, Eti-Osa LGA), and Sir Gerald Onuchukwu Gerico (Eze-Ohazurunye, Eze Udo/Onyendu Ndigbo Eti-Osa).
