Property Owners Dey Demand Compensation After NRC Displace Dem For Lagos

Property owners for Ebute-Metta, Lagos don dey shout say Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) never pay dem compensation after dem forcefully carry dia houses comot since 2018 for rail infrastructure work. Five families wey NRC unlawfully take dia houses for Adisa Estate, Murtala Muhammed Way, Ebute-Metta, had dragged di matter go Federal High Court Lagos since 2019. Dem include Oba Akinola Ovetade Akinrera, Alhaja Aisha Aminu Gwadabe, Alhaja Sadiat Abduiazeez, Mr Justin Ajufo and Mr Ayodele Joseph Ojo. Court, on May 9, 2023, talk say di takeover wey NRC do for Ebute-Metta station construction no follow law and award N10 million damages against NRC. Justice Y Bogoro yan say di seizure wey happen on October 10, 2018, with more than 100 armed police, na violation of dem rights under Section 43 & 44(1)(a) of di 1999 Constitution and Article 14 of African Charter on Human Rights. NRC suppose pay N10 million for di infringement.

NRC PR, Adeyinka Aderibigbe yan say FMOT through CCECC appoint Dupe Longe & Associates to check and pay compensation for 19 people affected for Adisa Estate. Five of dem initially refuse to collect di money, but two don finally gree, possibly because dem lawyer discourage dem before. Counsel for di landlords, Akeem Aponmade, yan say all di families want na proper compensation wey dem dey entitled to. Dem don write letter to NRC MD, Dr Kayode Opeifa, on October 8, 2025, demand total sum of N154.25 million for di five families, based on valuation wey dem get years ago.
